Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.
It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...
Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual
We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.
Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.
Hi all,
I have been processing some M42 data using tutorials on Youtube and all my result images are in black and white.
Can someone point me to a tutorial or workflow to get the final stacked images to show as colour?
My images save as FITS files for GIMP
Thanks
Matt

You will need to provide more information before anyone can help - but it is very likely that it is one simple error somewhere in your workflow.
Let me ask one question to start.
- When the data has been integrated in APP and the integration is loaded into the APP viewer do you see a colour image ?
A yes or no answer will take us down different troubleshooting paths.
Also (to save some time) what camera and what acquisition software did you use ?
JC
Thanks for replying John!
When I complete the stacking process, the output that is displayed on the screen is colour. The fits image that is saved in the destination folder in the working directory loads up as greyscale when it opens in GIMP.
The camera is a ZWO ASI533MC PRO and the captures are done via the ASI Studio suite (ASIIMAGE).
Matt
Save the stacked image as a tiff file. Does that open as a colour image in GIMP? If it does then the issue is with how GIMP reads FITS files.
That worked Meredith.
On the downside, the TIFF file was significantly smaller than the APP output fits file so quality will suffer?
Save the tiff as a 16 bit tiff and you won't lose any noticeable quality. Save it as a 32 bit tiff (if your other software can open them) and it will be the same quality.
Thanks Jurgen- your solution has solved the issue I was experiencing.

Looks like others beat me to it. I live in Australia, so I was asleep when this was going on. Meridith and Jurgen said most of what I was going to say.
Anyway - glad your issue is solved. Think about moving to NINA - it can do so much more than ASI Studio.
JC
Thanks John.
I will look into NINA software.
Matt
Hi all,
Thank you very much for assisting Matthew @matt-langridgesky-com with his issue.
Can I assume that the issue is solved Matthew? Or do you need any more assistance?
