2026-10-09 APP 2.0.0-beta48 has been released !
This is mainly a bug fix release for the reported bugs in beta47. In addition it has a significant User Interface performance improvement noticable when you need to process 1000s of images in APP.
2026-10-03 APP 2.0.0-beta47 has been released !
This is a very big release... many code optimizations/rewrites, many parts of APP are much faster and more precise, especially star analysis and registration are much faster ! Big mosaics will go much faster 🙂
And we introduce a new preview filter, which includes the new Adaptive Deep Sky Stretch and a General Levels Stretch, this has been long over due. The old preview filter (the panel on the right side to stretch and preview your data) has not been updated for a couple of years and it is a critical part of any APP session.
Adaptive Deep Sky Stretch or ADSS is a much more intuitive stretch algorithm. It is also color preserving (which is a great new addition in itself ! ) which means that the highlights are no longer bleached, color is maintained from the linear data while stretching. You can simply stretch your data using the sky background level and signal width sliders which work much easier and more intuitive. You no longer need to fiddle with the old complicated sliders with zoom buttons. All the zoom buttons for the sliders are made redundant. And you can enter slider values in the slider value fields yourself. I will make a youtube video in the coming days to explain and fully introduce ADSS. Once the video is ready, it will be highlighted on the forum.
RGB Combine upgrade !. The RGB Combine Tool has been rewritten mostly. The tool is faster and easier to use and most importantly, the Luminance slider to inject a luminance channel or channels into the RGB composite is now working correctly. It no longer bleaches the RGB colors. Combined with the new ADSS preview, you will get much better and easier great composites with great color! I will also explain this in a new youtube video.
Hi Mabula,
first, good to hear that you are healthy again.
Second:
I have a problem with the registration. I have made two separate stacks from different nights. Both images for itself are fine, all stars registrated and congruent until the corners. But if i stack now both stacked images, no setting helps, the total stacked image is not registered well. I have tried DDC on/off, Mosaicmode, Normalmode, 500 stars analysis, 10.000 stars analysis, with/without multisession processing ... the result is always this, only on the right lower side all stars are not congruent.
Here night one (50x300s) and night two (40x300s)
and here the result when I stack both images
If I take all single subs from both nights and stack them in one session, the result is good (50+40 *300s).
So why is it not possible to stack different stacked images, but no problem with single subs from different sessions ?
best regards
Werner
PS: I tried it with several different images, made with different telescopes, different cameras etc. It is always the same effect. Stacking ALL subs together from different nights, different optical trains and different cameras ... result is fine. But if I stack day by day and stack the results to a final image ... failed with not congruent stars, in the center good, at the corners bad.
I have uninstalled beta46, reinstalled beta36, uninstalled beta36 und beta46 new installed (always after a restart of my computer) and now it works.
I also having the exact same problem. I will try beta 36 as a test as well.
Ok, I fixed it for me by changing from ‘triangles’ to ‘pentagons’ in the registration tab.
Hi @wstumpferlgmx-de and @andybooth,
If you try to register 2 stacks where you registered a first stack with DDC enabled where the data does not need DDC really, then you can and probably will run into this issue because APP then tries to dedistort data that does not need dedistortion and older versions of APP can then overcorrect the results, (very bad overcorrections would give very weird swirls in the result, then DDC entered mathematical unstability....) If you then use such a result to register with another stack, the logic can be gone. Hope that that makes a bit sense, it is rather technical and it has to do with how APP's dynamic distortion correction works, but...
In beta47 and thus beta48 however I have actually implemented new stabilizers for DDC. These stabilizers are fully implemented in the 2-view phase, but not yet completely in multiple-view normal registration nor in multiple view projective mosaic mode. Calibrated projective mosaic mode is fully stabilized, since that mode needed it the most.
Can you try again with beta48? It is vital for the test that you make the 2 separate stacks in beta48 and then try to register the stacks and integrate them with beta48. Is the result now good or still wrong?
If wrong, then please share such a dataset with me and I will implement the additional stabilizers needed. I would need the dataset of both stacks so I can create them myself and then register them to a whole.
You can upload a dataset here if beta48 still has this problem:
https://upload.astropixelprocessor.com/
username: uploadData
password: uploadTestData
Please make a folder with your name and issue like : Werner-DistortionShownIn2StacksCombined
and upload the data there and let me know once done.
I have already opened an issue on my issue list to test this because I know that not all registration paths are fully stabilized in this sense yet and we need to implement that for sure.
Mabula
