Linux vs Windows?

Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

Hi,

I've just built a new PC - Ryzen 1700, 16gb ram, ssd etc. I've installed Windows 7, but am thinking seriously of putting a copy of Linux Mint Cinnamon on - perhaps in a dual boot config.

Does APP run any quicker in Linux, ie is there any performance advantage?

If I install APP on both the Windows and the Linux partitions, does that count as 2 of my 3 allowed APP installations? I have it on my laptop - Win 10, so only one install at the moment.

cheers

Gary

Hi Gary @garyrmck,

That sounds like a nice new PC 😉

I have done lots of testing on Linux virtual systems (including LinuxMint 17.0 & 17.1)  in Oracle VirtualBox, so it used a certain amount of CPU threads and GBs memory of the mother pc, which is a Threadripper windows 10 machine 😉

I could not see clear performance differences between windows 10 and Linux on a virtual machine then. Maybe if you run it on a non-virtual Linux, you'll see some performance gain, but i am not quite sure. It would be interesting to know off course.

Linux, as an Operating System, is of course much less demanding on hardware resource then Windows 10, so performance on the Linux system could be better. But with enough memory (16Gb of Ram) and enough CPU threads, the differences could be hard to tell.

APP as an application is developed 100% platform independently, so it should run more or less the same on Linux as on Windows as on MacOS with the same hardware resource available. 99,9 & of the code in APP is the same for all platforms. In the future, I'll implement the use of calculations on the GPU. Then the differences might become more noticeble perhaps, because then OS specific code is needed to talk directly with the GPU.

So for now, I think running APP on Linux should be at least as nice as on Windows, perhaps a little bit nicer 😉

Regarding the installations, yes, if you install it on both the windows and linux partitions, both will count as an activation. This also applies for running APP in a virtual machine on a mothermachine.

In the future, you will be able to control the license activations from within APP, but for now, if you need to deactivate a machine, just contact me and I will do it 😉

Hi Mabula,

thanks so much for the detailed reply. I'll stick to windows for a while but may soon shift to linux. Will be interesting to see if there is any speed benefit.

cheers

@mabula-admin Hello,

are there any new insights in matters of performance differences between Linux and Windows? Receiving a new PC the next days with 16 cores and 64 gb Mem

Hi Stefan,

No, no real insights, on Linux APP should perform just as well as on Windows, and I still expect it to run a little bit better on Linux, since it is less resource hungry as windows 10 or 11 I think. But this would only hold for a machine with relatively little hardware resources, especially little RAM. So if your new machine has 64GB of RAM, I would expect that benchmarks on Linux or Windows (not through virtualization) will almost give the same results, or better said, i would think the difference would not be significant in favor of one of the Operating Systems.
