Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.
It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...
Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual
We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.
Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.
Hi, i proceded like the same way i used in other shot, loading light, dark, flat, dark flat and bias frames, all settings by defualt, but the final result is a black frame.
That not happening if i uncheck the "neutralize background" in the 5 step (but the result have color and luminance wrong).
Some solutions...
Thanks
I'm also not expert but it sounds like you do not combine. I apologise if I misunderstood you.
Integration result is gray you need to go Tools tab and select Combine RGB. Choose combining style HSO or SHO or LRGB etc then click on "Add Channel". It will open the folder, where integrated files stored. Select Ha-SII-OII or L-R-G-B (whatever) files then click on re-calculate. Colored frame will come. Continiue processing.
Hi Volkan,
the result frame is not BW but is black, no one star and not the nebula image, only black.
If i not add the dark frame (only for test) that not happen.
Very stranger.
Hi Fabio,
Do you use some kind of multi-small band filter like L-Extreme? With OSC, (L)RGB or single small band filters like OIII and Ha this shouldn't happen. What camera are you using? How did you take dark, flat and dark flat or bias frames?
Wouter
Did you ever find a solution for this? I've just had it happen to me too.
Long time user of the software, so I'm quite certain it's not my data. But I did check. No luck, it all looks good.
I did just upgrade to Mac OS to Big Sur. Maybe just coincidence.
What APP version are you using? APP does seem to work on Big Sur (as many now have confirmed) but may still have an issue with somewhat older versions.
1.083 beta 1
Hi,
i use ASI294MCPRO, and L-enhance filter, i took all calibration frame, like the previuos time on another subject but whitout problems.
I haven't had a chance to try again yet due to the cloudy sky
Like you, the problem seems to be something with the MasterDark. When I leave it out, the image processes just fine. Add it and it goes BLACK.
The MD seems fine to me, but I'll replace it with a different one and see if there is a different result. Maybe it's the file? Would be odd, since this the same MD I've used before...but perhaps it's corrupt somehow.
No change, still black. I'm going to roll back to 1.082 and see if it makes any difference.
This could definitely be an issue with the dark, are your offsets > 0, just as a quick check? Sometimes if there is a tiny bit of light pollution in it, it can also cause all kinds of issues.
I've had the same bug in the past - sometimes I also get an all blue frame.
I've stopped trusting the automatic master frames and always add my own for each run and it seems to work fine.
The MD is quite blue, but I didn't realize how much until I stretched it. Quite likely the problem. I'll make a new one.
THANKS Paul.
I tried with the old frames (august 2020), light, dark, flat, dark flat and all work fine. All default settings.
If i take new dark, at the same exposure time and sensor temperature, the process fails and the final image is black.
Very strange
It is an odd problem. The MD that has given me issues now, is the same one that I've used since April. That is why I thought it was software related.
After taking new darks, the problem has gone away. I cannot explain it. At least now I know what to check if it happens again.
Very strange indeed. What has changed in the mean time? Did you use different software to take the images in August than now? Was there a driver update in the mean time? Anything else that you can think of?
I use ASI Studio to take the image and precisely ASIImg and ASI294MC PRO camera, the software package is been updated from 1.2.0 to 1.2.1 version at the 18 september 2020, is it possible that this creates this problem?
I am inclined to answer that question with "no" but honestly I am not sure anymore. Perhaps ASI Studio now introduces a different offset for dark or bias frames which causes the problem. I am not familiar with the software so this is a blind guess. Can you check the FITS headers of your images and verify that the offset and other settings (gain etc) are the same in all images?
Difficult to know, but it could definitely be the issue. I've seen more issues with special photo-taking software before, some seem to not follow the standard FITS rules or miss a FITS header that APP needs etc.
Good idea @Vincent-mod @wvreeven using FITS liberator i saw the new dark frames have minimum value greater than the minimum value of light frames, subtracting the result is black. I will try in a the new session with lights and darks in the same session. Thanks.
Hi , I have te same problem if I use dark frame the final image is black , if i don't use them the integrated image is fine. Actually I changed software now I use Nina but the darks were taken with Asiair. I try to take new darks let's see if it works. I use 1,083 beta 2
Gabriele
@gabririn Hi Gabriele. Yes, all frames need to be taken with the same software.
Thanks again! I did new darks with the same software (NINA) and it worked fine!
Any conclusion on this problem?
If I integrate two subs plus master dark - everything looks fine
If I integrate all 55 subs plus the same master dark - I get black image.
So it does not sound like master dark is the problem.
(I have been using APP for many images successfully until now)
Anybody can help?
Thanks
@tchylek Hi Tomas, it is hard to pin point the cause without more info. Did you take the darks for the master dark with the same software as the lights? Do you use an external HD for processing? What version of APP are you on?
@wvreeven I have been using the same master dark (obtained with Sharpcap) and the same ZWO294MC camera for the last year with no problem. Processed dozens of subs successfully. I recently switched to APP 1.083 . Except that, there is no reason to obtain different result. Maybe Windows10 update? Memory?
Also, why would it process 2 subs ok but not 50?
@tchylek Those are all good questions and honestly I don't know. Would you mind uploading the data to https://upload.astropixelprocessor.com/ using upload2 as both username and password? Please create a directory called tchylek_dark and put the data in there. Let me know when the upload is complete and I'll have a look at the data. Thanks!
@wvreeven Thank you, the upload started. The list includes 58 subs and the master dark.
In the meantime I did integration without the master dark and it came ok.
That points to the master dark, but why was it working good with the same master dark until two weeks ago?
Also, it is working ok with this master dark when stacking only 2 subs.
Real mystery.
Thanks for your help.
