Apr 9 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 has been released !

It has a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration, for mosaics even faster! We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. Improved Outlier Rejection with LN 2.0 rejection. macOS CMD+A works now in file chooser ! And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming hours...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

Mabula,

I'm just wondering if your version 2.0 is to the point where you're ready to call it feature-complete, and you're down to bugfixes and doc? Love APP to bits, but this has been a much longer wait than I expected.

For my part, I'm not so confident of my processing skills to be interested in a Beta.  Rather, I'm waiting on a GA release (or maybe even the point-one after GA :-).

Thanks for any updates!

- Bob

Hey Bob - have you been using the Betas? In my experience they are not really Betas as such as a continuous release train of very stable micro updates  - I'd get onto it now if you aren't already.

I do agree with the sentiment that Aries just need to declare it "done" and start shipping dot releases and release candidates as a seperate process.

The 2.0 "beta" is and has been production for some time now in my experience.

Paul,

Thanks! No, I have not been using the Betas.  I'm not up for testing image processing software, but I do keep an eye on the posts going by.  Kudos to the folks participating in the Betas, but I'll wait for the GA release to the (linux) repositories, or perhaps the point-one after that.

I am encouraged that you sound like you've been happy with the R2.0's.

I've been using the Betas regularly. I update whenever they are released and can't remember ever having a problem. Also, they usually have nice new features.

Hi Bob @devonshire , @xthestreams, @astrogee

Thank you very much for your question and please accept my apologies for letting you wait for my answer.

The release of 2.0 stable is my main priority and we are definitely nearly there now. I must admit that the release of so many beta's for 2.0.0 is also not something I am happy with. But maybe I can give a more in depth explanation:

With 2.0 we decided to move APP to a more modern development platform for several reasons like making it ready for the newest operating systems and technology. One major reason was that our old development platform was no longer accepted by Apple to be run on their latest macOS versions. Another reason is also Apple related, our old development platform would simply not work for a natively compiled Apple Silicon version of APP. These problems have been addressed completely and the latest 2.0.0 beta works great on the newest macOS versions and runs natively on Apple Silicon making it rather fast actually. This took a lot of work earlier this year so that explains partly the long beta cycle.

For the 2.0 stable release, we are now working on the last new feature to be implemented, which is save/load of all settings and whole projects. The latest beta version already stores all processing settings and thus are restored with an APP restart, so we are now working on the project part ;-). In addition we have a couple of bugs/issues that we need to solve still partly related to the move to new development platform before we want to announce 2.0 stable alongside the long awaited manual. We are confident that once 2.0 stable is ready with the manual, it will greatly improve usability of APP and understanding of all of APP's functions.

And yes, the current beta 2.0.0-beta26 is in fact very good and stable in most situations 😉 It definitely is much better and faster than the old 1.083 version which was the last one before the 2.0.0 beta cycle started, so I can only advicee everyone to simply use the latest APP 2.0.0 beta.

I can not give a time line/date for the 2.0 stable release, I can only say that it will be released once ready, we have no reason whatsoever to postpone that release, nor publication of the manual.

@mabula-admin If you need someone to 'test' the manual, I am happy to help!
