Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

One thing that I've never understood is why the default weighting in 6) Integration is Equal. Since many new users often start using the defaults with APP they would automatically get a less than optimal result with this setting then if they used Quality.

Also in version 1.076  A new choice - automatic integration seems to be great. The documentation says  "With the automatic integration method, APP will automatically set either median or average integration, set suitable integration weights (either equal or quality weights) and it will enable an outlier rejection filter with suitable kappa low and high values, all depending on the number of frames in the integration/stack. With light frames, it will even enable Local Normalization rejection if preferred. " I don't understand how Equal Weight can ever be better than Quality Weight.

Without knowing the selection criteria for Quality vs Equal I would hesitate to use this excellent new automatic integration choice.

It's about the number of frames basically, below 20 it has an advantage to go for one or the other. This will be clear in the upcoming documentation, the automatic setting will make this easy also for the novice user.

Hi,

I tried all of them recently and could see no difference. No matter if I have set "equal" or "star shape" or "quality" or "SNR".

That's possible, sometimes the differences are minor. You propably can tell when zooming in and "pixel peep". But it'll depend on the quality of the data.

No ... not even that. I was up to 400% view. And I couldn't see a difference. Pixel was exactly the same.
The data was from a color camera (Canon 5D MK IV). Maybe this is different with a mono camera?

Well no, but it'll depend a lot on things like the amount of subs, sky quality, noise, etc. If all your subs are excellent for instance, the quality integration will not be very different (if at all) from integrating on all.
