1. failed to save as tif file
app stop responding
Mac OSx 10.11.6
2. not support Pentax RAW (PEF/DNG) format?
Hi Sheng,
Thank you for your feedback
1) Could you possibly share the file that you tried to save as tiff so I can have a look at what's happening?
2) No not yet, it will come, but for now, see /faq/which-image-formats-are-supported-by-app/
Kind regards,
Mabula
Hi Sheng,
I have downloaded both fits files, and I have tried to save them both as TIFF files using the 3 different ICC profiles APP currently offers.
It works fine over here.
What I did:
I loaded a FITS into the image viewer:
Clicked on the save button below the histogram with the stretch selectbox on (to save the stretched image):
Choose TIFF
Tried with all 3 ICC profiles
Loaded the TIFF into the image viewer:
Maybe you can describe where it goes wrong on your system, with a screenshot attached? And possibly the details of your computer, like OS and hardware specification?
Regards,
Mabula
Hi Mabula,
I think i've discovered why the saving process failed.
the saving process fail if i set the work directory to my SSD drive,
and
when i changed the work directory to my home directory(gleeman), it processed correctly.
my system :
macbook pro5,5
OS X El Capitan 10.11.6
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
8 GB memory
Boot ROM : MBP55.00AC.B03
Hard drives and file systems:
regards,
Hi Sheng,
Thank you very much for this information.
I use an external HDD on my macbook together with APP. To get it working correctly, you need to make sure that your MacOS has proper rights to write on the SSD disk. I see it's an exFAT disk. Can you normally transfer files to the SSD without problems?
Cheers,
Mabula
hi Mabula,
I removed my built-in DVD drive and replaced it by SSD few months ago,
I can transfer files to this SSD without any problem
(btw, APP autosave the stacked Fits to SSD without problem.)
regards,
gleeman
Hi Gleeman,
Indeed, I forgot about the fits stack that was saved already. Does the TIFF save error happen each time you try it to the SSD?
The error could be related to saving of APP to an exFAT file system. I'll try to replicate this to check if an error occurs.
Mabula.
Hi Gleeman,
I have checked if APP can save FITS,TIFF, JPG to an exfat file system on a simpel USB stick. This works, but I do notice it's not very clear to the user when APP is actually saving the file. Possibly the process can be interrupted and this could trigger the error. I'll try to fix this and this will hopefully resolve this problem.
I'll let you know when you can try with a new version 😉
Mabula
thank you Mabula
yes, more specifically , APP did save .tiff files on my SSD, but none of them has been finished .
the APP seems freeze every time I try to save the tiff file (I have waited ten minutes or nearly an hour), then I closed the APP or forced it to quit. after I closed the APP, I could not restart it . moreover, I can't shutdown my MBP unless I press the power to shutdown and restart it .
regards,
gleeman
Thank you Gleeman,
I'll do further testing with my macbook to an exfat file system. I personally had a rough time with an NTFS USB3.0 external drive. The solution was a proper driver NTFS driver for MacOS, Paragon's NTFS driver solved the problem in that case.
Probably a similar issue is occuring on your system relating to how MacOS handles exFAT, so I'll dive into that 😉
Mabula
Hi Gleeman,
I have uploaded a new version yesterday, 1.043. Can you please try if the tiff saving to your SSD now works and let me know?
Sorry for the delay, I have adjusted several things to try to fix this problem on your system:
- When APP saves a fill, you will now see a pop-up indicating it's saving a file
- in the console panel, you'll see progres reported of image saving.
- the internal code to read and write TIFF files has been upgraded to a new version.
If it still fails, please show me screenshot of the main APP Window and the latest information in the Console Panel.
I'll adjust your trial period to compensate you for the trouble 😉
Mabula
hi Mabula
I'll try it today, thank you
regards,
gleeman
Thank you Gleeman for testing again and showing the screen and console output.
It's clear the actual write process of the tiff to your exfat SSD fails.
So to summarize you system details:
- macbook pro5,5
- OS X El Capitan 10.11.6
- 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- 8 GB memory
- Boot ROM : MBP55.00AC.B03
- ExFAT file system on new internal SSD drive
- "the APP seems freeze every time I try to save the tiff file (I have waited ten minutes or nearly an hour), then I closed the APP or forced it to quit. after I closed the APP, I could not restart it . moreover, I can't shutdown my MBP unless I press the power to shutdown and restart it . "
I know saving a FITS file does work, how about saving a JPG does that work?
Kind regards,
Mabula
Okay, that's very usefull information, thank you gleeman 😉
If you save a tiff directly from, I guess a 32bits integration, then it fails on your system. It tries to create a 32bits per channel TIFF then.
If you convert the JPG to TIFF, then the TIFF will only be 8bits per channel isnce the JPS is only 8bits, the indication that that works, would probably mean, my TIFF writer has a problem here saving it as 32bits.
I have on my RFC list to give you the option of saving a tiff in 8/16/32bits. Currently it saves the TIFF in the bitdepth of the original data.
I'll try to do more testing in saving 32bits TIFFs on ExFAT filesystems, to see if I can find this problem.
Kind regards,
Mabula
I am having the same issue. Was this ever fixed?

I am having the same issue. Was this ever fixed?
Dan
Hi Dan @obturate.
What issue exactly? Please be as specific as you can about your problem that really helps us to solve it.
The above issue was rather specific and the problem seemed to be an ExFat drive in combination with MacOS at the time. The issue is very old. His MacOS release (El Capitan 10.11.6 released July 2016) had very bad support for the ExFat filesystem and it was an operating system IO problem if I recall correctly...
Can't you save a 32bits TIFF? Or can't you save any TIFF? On what platform are you? What is the filesystem of the drive to which you are saving?
Kind regards,
Mabula
Thanks for the prompt reply. I'm using a MacBook pro, catalina 10.5.2. My symptoms were the same as the original poster.
I found a workaround. I had an external hard drive set as my work directory. I found if I copied the .fit file to my desktop, and then set my work directory to the desktop, app would save the file as a tiff properly.
