Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and itĀ  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

It would be extreemly usefull to add a star removal tool to the toolbox. I would envisage sliders to set the threshold of what is classified as a star and also the ability to select the margin around the star. the removed star being filled with data from surrounding pixels. an output could also be a star map

Could be nice to have it in APP, but there is a very promising tool outside of APP, using neural network techniques, and it is free.

Having said that, there currently is no way to protect stars while stretching in APP, so having some sort of "star protection" would be great!

Not sure about if we would include starnet itself, as Mabula is already developing very good star detection algorithms, I think he would make it possible himself. Something like that for the comet integrations is being made. Who knows it can be applied in a broader sense, I don't know specifics about that.

Testing starnet now. Very usefull when not using narrowband. When motif is nebula or galaxies, the stars are mostly noise in the end result. Starnet should be included in 9 tools.

I have been working on a Star Reducer/Removal tool for APP 1.083. The tool will be needed as well in the comet integration to get a sharp comet and sharp stars automatically.

To make this tool work very well, it is rather challenging, so it is taking some time in development.

I will not use Starnet in APP because it is really very !!! slow and it does not work great on all images I have seen with my test data to be honest.

This is a small teaser, soon I will show more:

IC1396a in SHO palette, data shot by myself with a Takahashi TSA102 @ f/5.6, asi1600mm-c, and 3nm astrodon filters.

Left is the original image with stretch, right is same stretch of star reduced linear data...

Great to hear from you again on a concrete roadmap item. To be honest, the next-release blog was a bit desolate for a long time.Ā 

From my experience: Starnet++ can be quite fast when using even a modest GPU. Having said that, as a user of a fast reflector (with diffraction spikes and a bit of a halo around stars), Starnet++ does leave a bit of a mess which takes time to clean. I am very looking forward to APP's implementation of Star removal/reduction.

Now that I might have your attention: Many thanks for expanding the moderator/support team. There is great energy in supporting the userbase thanks to the combined effort of @Vincent-Moderator and @Wouter-Moderator. Greatly appreciated!

Thanks @annehouw that's really appreciated! The updates on the latest release have indeed taken more time then usual, this is because the features are way more complex. As APP is growing, the team is as well, slowly but surely so hopefully that will result in faster updates down the road.

Hello: A great result, I like it more than the total and brutal removal of the background stars, the result is too artificial.
Its reduction (APP) leaves a subtle trail of stars that seems to me a better solution and gives a more natural look to the final image.

@mabula-admin this is indeed very very beautiful. Full star removal is rarely pretty, your examples look very good to me and also show the love and dedication that you are bringing into your solution. Looking forward to put my hands on the next version.
