2026-10-09 APP 2.0.0-beta48 has been released !

This is mainly a bug fix release for the reported bugs in beta47. In addition it has a significant User Interface performance improvement noticable when you need to process 1000s of images in APP.

2026-10-03 APP 2.0.0-beta47 has been released !

This is a very big release... many code optimizations/rewrites, many parts of APP are much faster and more precise, especially star analysis and registration are much faster ! Big mosaics will go much faster 🙂

And we introduce a new preview filter, which includes the new Adaptive Deep Sky Stretch and a General Levels Stretch, this has been long over due. The old preview filter (the panel on the right side to stretch and preview your data) has not been updated for a couple of years and it is a critical part of any APP session.

Adaptive Deep Sky Stretch or ADSS is a much more intuitive stretch algorithm. It is also color preserving (which is a great new addition in itself ! ) which means that the highlights are no longer bleached, color is maintained from the linear data while stretching. You can simply stretch your data using the sky background level and signal width sliders which work much easier and more intuitive. You no longer need to fiddle with the old complicated sliders with zoom buttons. All the zoom buttons for the sliders are made redundant. And you can enter slider values in the slider value fields yourself. I will make a youtube video in the coming days to explain and fully introduce ADSS. Once the video is ready, it will be highlighted on the forum.

RGB Combine upgrade !. The RGB Combine Tool has been rewritten mostly. The tool is faster and easier to use and most importantly, the Luminance slider to inject a luminance channel or channels into the RGB composite is now working correctly. It no longer bleaches the RGB colors. Combined with the new ADSS preview, you will get much better and easier great composites with great color! I will also explain this in a new youtube video.

Hi Mabula,

I just installed versión 1.056 ( great improvements, a lot of hard work )
but have problems with the working directory.
On my laptop I have 3 partitions:  C is for programs and windows
d: is the swap partition and E: is the data partition with frames.
With version 1.055 it worked fine selecting E: and whatever directory
but with the new version doing the same selection APP comes back
with lack of diskspace on this partition which is C and not E
as selected .
Are there any workarounds, environment variables to set??
The temp directories are all on E, also for windows.

Thanks for any feedback!

Edit by Mabula: from other new topic which I moved here:

Hi Mabula,

I just tried again after cleaning up my C-partition that had only 3.9Gb of

free space. APP was complaining about this and didn't want to process

beyond analise stars. Now after freeing up some space it works fine again.

It seems as if APP does need some space on the C- partition eventhough

it was set to the E-partition.

So this was a user-error ( as ususalwith me 🙂  )

Sorry for the earlier post.

Hi Lammetus,

I checked, but everything seems to be working like expected over here. I can select all harddrives visible and the amount shown is correct (on Windows, MacOS and Linux).

Can you please post a screenshot so I can see how it fails?

Kind regards,

Mabula

Hmm, okay, but that still shouldn't happen then. At least I know where to look now I think 😉

Thank you Lammertus !

As always Mabula, if there is any sort of problems, comunicating

with you and then it works!

Don't know why some of the "Wise" people on Cloudynights seem to

be reluctant to admit that APP is a fresh wind and beyond that gives

better results. I personally don't want to dicsuss with these people!

Best regards and sorry to have posted a doubt where I was the culprit!

  1. It is only that they have become familiar with the software they use and become attached, and in some cases have spent money on it, think it's the bee's knees since they have spent so many times working out the quirks already.. I was in that group until I tried app a second time. I am liking it now much better. Tonight I'm going to do M45 in my backyard in the city I will post it. Oh yes, and I must say that one of my favorite features about the app software is the gong sound 😃

Hi Lammertus,

Thank you very much for your kind words.

I know of some of the discussions on several fora worldwide about APP, in particular the discussions on Cloudy Nights.

For most problems that users encounter, a simple solution/explanation is available.

If users don't ask about a problem, then it's (very) hard for me, to help them and/or advise them ;-( .

On the other hand, I need to work on the documentation so users can find the answers more quickly off course. This is work in progress as you know.

Let's not forget, APP has been launched for only several months now, and as time goes by, APP will become stronger, more robust and more mature as an application, and with more and more documentation with it.

After all, APP is already seriously being compared with the best applications out there, which do have had  10+ years of development time more than APP. So in that perspective, I think I (and APP) are catching up very fast. It's easy to forget that applications like PI and Nebuulosity have been out there for a long time already... 😉

With respect to the discussions on other fora, for me, it's way too time-consuming for me to participate in those discussions and also not very effective. It would be very helpfull though if users simply contact me by e-mail or on the APP forum. So all interested APP users can benefit. So if you participate in these discussions, do point out, that I am easily contacted by e-mail or on this forum, to answer any questions interested users might have 😉

(from my website traffic and license orders, I know dozens of these discussions are on-going on fora from America to the Far East...  APP is being used daily by a lot of people worldwide already 😉 )

And thank you Greg for your kind words as well 😉

The gong was an idea of Scott Rosen actually 😉 Probably, in a future version, there will be 2 different sounds, one for a succesfull completion of a process, and another if the user needs to be warned for some reason.
