Large TIFF files in...

Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and itĀ  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

Hi all Ā

I am new to APP (trial).Ā  I have Sony A7rii and therefore using 16bit TIFF files (~240MB) converted from uncompressed .ARW.Ā  These files load into APP but I get java outofmemory errors on calibration or analyse stars, even with small numbers of subs.Ā  I am asking at this stage whether such files should be OK in APP, before perservering further with settings. (Desktop i7, 16GB,windows 10)Ā  (These files process OK in Nebulosity 4, but not DSS 3.4.4)Ā

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the APP forum šŸ˜‰

The files should be okay, you only need to configure APP to use more memory than the initial configured amount of 2GB. Check this topic on how to do this:

https://www.astropixelprocessor.com/community/faq/how-much-memory-should-i-allocate-to-app/

So with your 16GB of memory and windows 10, I would set the amount of memory that APP can use to 12-15GBs. Leaving 1 -4 GBs of memory to spare to let Windows 10 function properly šŸ˜‰

Your files shouldn't need more than 4GB of memory for APP to function without out of memory exceptions to occur, unless you are starting to make big mosaics. Then more memory is required.

Let me know if you can process the Tiffs fine now šŸ˜‰

Sony RAW support will come by the way, working on it.
