Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

Hi Mabula @mabula-admin    I am making a mosaic of the large Supernova Remnant near the Rosette and Cone Nebula.  When post processing I noticed some checkerboard noise and some smaller scale noise in the OIII data.  I created four very irregular "panels" by stacking data from 4-6 sessions looking at slightly different areas around the 4 panels.  I over stretched the Ha and color mosaics and uncovered the same noise.  I went to the individual panel that made up the worst area and noticed the noise.  I then stacked each component of the panel and didn't see the noise in the individual components.  I stacked the components to recreate the panel and the noise was there again.  I have been using LNC 1st degree with 3-10 iterations and MBB on.  The first picture is the original mosaic area that first caught my eye.  The second picture is the component picture of that same area... note that I did apply NoiseXTerminatior to the image.  The third image is a mosaic using the components images and you can see the noise in the right top corner.  thank you

Note that the images are in reverse order ... first is third... third is first.

Update:  I have been running a lot of experiments but the large scale noise (checkerboard) could a result of NoiseXterminator in PixInsight.  I will continue to run experiments.

Update 2:  NOT caused by NoiseXterminator alone.  I went back to the original OIII mosaic and only stretched it with HistrogramTransformation... no BlurX or NoiseX.

Its usually caused by bad data and the starxterminator.

Stefan, thank you so much for your reply.  I was just coming to add an update when I saw your reply.  You are correct on both fronts.  I found ONE stray frame in one of my panels that caused lots of noise and it appears that the noise along with StarX that causes the issues.

Hi Tim @tstevens83 and Stefan @digitaliz-se,

Thank you very much for reporting this. Can I conclude that this issue is not related to APP then? Is all caused by StarXTermnator?

It looks lik that tool works in tiles on the data and makes a mess off it on your data.

Can I close the issue here?

Mabula
