Issue With Flats Ap...

Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

All —

I’m trying to figure out why my flats are not working to remove dust motes in my light subs.  I believe that the issue is with APP — perhaps I am not using the correct setting — because others have been able to use my callibration frames successfully to eliminate the dust motes.

Here are all the Frames:

Dropbox Logo Dropbox File (Private or Invalid)

The frames were taken with a ZWO 294 MC Pro through the Celestron Edge 9.25. I have included two sets of flats — long flats of over 2 seconds shot through white T-shirt at the wall. Accompanying dark flats included.  I separately include short flats shot through white t-shirt at light panel. Accompanying dark flats included. Light and dark frames included. We

What do you think is wrong? I upload lights, flats, darks and dark flats under APP tab 1.  Then I create a master flat/dark that I save under tab 2.  Then I just go tab by tab and integrate. Am I missing a atep?

thanks!!

Hi Charitha @felixa7,

Thank you for posting this, I will have a look at your data and will let you know. Can you share the result of somehow that claims or shows that they can process it correctly?

@mabula-admin yes!  Here’s a link to the cloudynights page where folks were able to get callibrated images: https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/880236-iris-nebula-does-anyone-want-to-try-eliminating-motes-please/?fromsearch=1.  If the link is blocked from the forum, I can send you the images.

thanks!!

Hi @felixa7,

Thank you for the link on Cloudy Nights.

I just ran your data with the short flats, and all works correctly with APP's default settings in 2.0.0-beta17:

The files as loaded:

files loaded masters created and applied to lights

A single frame loaded by double clicking on the light in the list with the image viewer in raw mode (thus showing the raw image data):

raw image enhanced contrast

That same single frame with the calibration masters applied, by loading the image in calibrated mode, showing calibration is working correctly for both dark subtraction and flat-field correction:

calibrated image enhanced contrast

Finally the light frame integration, this shows only 3 bad dust motes and clearly because the dust moved during the imaging session I would think. It is a far better result than you showed, so I guess you are running APP not with it's default settings causing a problem somewhere? Or perhaps you are running a much older APP version?

The images posted on Cloudy Nights are less stretched and not contrast enhanced, so they will likely be the same as my result, which is shown below, I would think.

Can you describe how you create the masters, how you load the images? A screenshot of the frame list after 2)Calibrate might be insightfull together with your settings in 2) Calibrate :

Iris Integration looks good

I will run your data with the long flats as well now.

And the result with the long exposure flats, they work less well, they overcorrect the vignetting clearly, stretch with extra contrast again:

Iris Integration long flats overcorrect vignetting

Your images are incredible!!  I don’t think that I am handling the master flats correctly.  I just downloaded the latest Beta version of APP and the outcomes were the same.  It’s really as though the flats were not being applied at all.

The information requested is attached.  I am using default settings.

tjanks!!

Hi!  Any further luck regarding why the Flats are not being applied properly when I calibrate using the latest version of APP?

Did you load all frames exactly like Mabula shows in the filelist?
