Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

Hi,

I suspect I'm just not setting something right but I have a problem with a mosaic I'm trying to do of the Heart Nebula. Its a 2 panel mosaic and when I stack each panel separately they both look ok. However, when I stack them together in order for APP to create the mosaic the bottom panel shows lots of smudged stars as though there is an alignment error.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this? Stretched individual panels and the mosaic attached.

One last piece of advice as well please.... you'll see from each panel that my stars towards the edge of each panel are not as good as they could be, egg shaped and all pointing towards the centre of the frame. I've always had this problem. Does this suggest the Coma corrector is too close to the DSLR? Kit is SW 130PDS, Baader MPC Mk3 CC and Canon EOS 600D camera.

Thanks
Ed

Thanks

@edarter Hi Ed, sorry for the late reply. For mosaics you should use following settings:

  • tab 3: set the number of stars to 2000 or possibly higher
  • tab 4: set the registration mode to mosaic and pattern recognition to triangles (though the default quadrilaterals also should work)
  • tab 5: set the mode to advanced

Can you confirm you do that?

Regarding the egg shape of the stars around the edges: if they point towards the center then that indeed indicates a too close distance of the sensor to the flattener.

@wvreeven thank you. I shall try these settings. Some of them I am pretty sure were set anyway but a couple of them possibly not. I'm just going to set the laptop off on this mission now to see whether it helps 🙂

Thanks
Ed

Just to report back on this - those settings hit the mark! Setting the Mosaic option did trigger a number of other questions that I needed to answer before it would process. Mainly around the fact that I had set the same optics used for every session, but I answered them as best I could (most were obvious) and the resulting mosaic is much much better. Thank you!
