Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.
It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...
Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual
We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.
Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.
Hi,
I posted in this forum around January this year about issues I've been having with producing Mosaics in APP. Unfortunately they didn't get resolved, and I've now tried with a new Mosaic. I've just photographed M31 as a 4 Pane Mosaic with the ASIAIR app using a 20% Overlap and I'm having the same issues that I had with my M42 Mosaic I originally wrote about.
I can stack the individual panels but when I combine them I get the result which clearly shows the overlap (1st Image). I also tried to just throw all the raw fits files into the mix and that took hours to run, but the result was even worse - although quite funky !!!! (Picture 2).
I have been using the parameters as set out by Vincent elsewhere on this forum. (Attached as well for reference). The mosaic has failed with 2 Cameras, M42 with a ZWO294MC Pro and this latest one with a ZWO2600Duo. Both shot with a200PDS Scope. The Mosaic function has worked before but not with these latest files - I can't think what I am doing wrong !
I'm using the latest Beta Software as on the main downloads page, my Computer is a 2017 iMac 27" with an i5 Processor, and 32gb of Ram.
For some reason I can't load the JPEGS as Native to this post, the Tiffs are too big and the .png also. It will only accept a zip file. When I try to +Add files it says Error - Unknown error - bizarre (Unless there is something weird in the iMac that is causing the issue ???? If you can't read the zip file I'll try to upload another way.
Many thanks
Graham.
Hi Graham
Just posting here from our dialogue via email. This looks to be related purely to your data, two of the panels have haze around the brightest stars, one is pretty bad in comparison to the other, and two of the panels do not have haze, this is likely caused by cloud.
Having loaded your frames up, rotated them to be the same orientation as the others, there's a clear difference between sky background quality, and whilst APP can account for some, I suspect this is so much of a difference that it's just not possible. You can also see that there's a different gradient direction in each of the panels.
How much data makes up each of the panels? I know you shot with an L-Pro, and the total for each panel is 1800s, I'd bet tempted to look through each of the individual frames and look at the quality of them, APP will provide you a graph of the frame quality also during stacking.
By the way, there's also an artifact in the same position of each of the mosaics, might want to take a look at your flats
APP is great for mosaics, I do lots of them, but the limiting factor will always be the quality of the data coming in, I have instances myself where a few "Problemtaic" frames cause the same thing you are getting.
Simon
@stastro Hi Simon,
What a comprehensive response, thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I’ll analyse the individual frames to see if I can identify the rogue ones and also have another crack at the target when we get some skies again.
There were 10 lights of 180 seconds in each panel. I also took flats, dark flats and darks.
I love APP but I do struggle with Mosaics - It’s a real learning curve !
One question, can you think why the gradients are in different directions, as they were all taken on the same night immediately after one another. Could it be a light leak, or maybe the clouds throwing reflections about ?
thanks again, Graham
@grahamdevenishgmail-com Morning Graham
Your gradient could be different because of the orientation of the scope, I presume two of the frames were on the opposite side of meridian to the other two (the fact I had to rotate two of the frames), but there is a stark difference in the gradients, here they all are in their original rotation:
Of course sky quality will impact gradients as well, you did not mention what camera this is from (and it is not evident in the FITS header), tell us more about your imaging setup (Scope, Camera etc)
Regards
Simon
Hi @grahamdevenishgmail-com & @stastro,
Thank you Simon for your assistance here.
Graham, I understand that you have made mosaics before successfully with APP, so I think it will be best for me to have a good look at your data to understand what is going here. Maybe there is a problem with your optical train which is hard to see, but is causing the issues, or perhaps it is like Simon argues. The data might lack some consistency. Anyway, I can not tell for sure without seeing the data myself, so please upload it here:

Please make a folder with your name and issue like: Graham-mosaic-issue
and upload your dataset there with all lights and all calibration files. Please separate the lights in different folders per panel if you can. FInally, let me know once uploaded and I will have a good look as soon as possible.
Mabula
Thanks Mabula. I've uploaded the files as requested, and in each of the individual Light Panels I've separated out what I think were the bad lights where cloud was affecting the image - However, the Top Left panel was left blank and there were still faint lines separating the panels even with only using the Light frames cleaned up. I will have another go at a Mosaic if we ever get a decent clear sky again......
I also accidentally created an additional folder which I'm unable to delete !
