Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

Just installed beta32 on a Win11 box. Loaded some images from  itelescope, the latest monthly one. IC434. Get this when loading images (see image, can't copy the text from the box)

IMG 9944

I haven't a clue where to look for this. I do have APP working in a smaller box but this one is a 8 core 48GB Dell I wanted to use.

When I setup the automated installation of WIN11 I did select this: Install Oracle VirtualBox Guest Additions

But the other win11 box has that as well.

Stumped

Dear George @w2db,

Thank you very much for posting your issue.

I understand that you are running in a virtual machine on some host. Is there any reason why you are running in a virtual machine? APP can be run on Linux, macOS and Windows directly and is not developed with virtualization in mind. What operating system has the host and why not run directly on the host? Performance will be better for sure. Or is the host in some cloud and is it not physically at your place?

That said, this error should not occur anyway I think, but the virtualization and how things are setup in that regard might influence things somehow.

The error seems to indicate that there is a problem with 1 or more of the FITS files that you are trying to load. Did you need to upload them to the virtual machine? Maybe the file or files are corrupt on the virtual machine after your upload?

Can you test the data from iTelescope on a host and not a virtual machine?

@mabula-admin you misunderstand. I am not running it in a virtual machine. I have installed Vbox on the machine and looking at the error message there is mention of the virtual machine which should have nothing to do with APP. I will say that processing other images from itelescope did work well. There may, as you state, be a problem in one or more of the fit files I'm trying to process. I cannot re-try right now since I am re-installing windows 11 on that computer right at the moment, then will need to re-install everything.

Hi George @w2db,

Okay, the error message from APP is not related at all to Oracle Virtual Box. Astro Pixel Processor runs on java which actually is a virtual machine on top of your operating system 😉 in that way, our code works the same on Windows, Linux and macOS.

So installing Oracle VirtualBox or using it should have no effect at all on APP.

If that error message appears again, please let me know and I will provide upload instructions so I can test those files 😉

@mabula-admin I'll try it again. Anything else runs perfectly. I have just re-installed windows 11 on the two PCs I use and now need to re-establish files, etc. But when I get a moment I'll re-download the files from iTelescope and  try it again. It is over 1GB of data.

Okay George, @w2db

No problem, let me know if the issue re-occurs, then we need to have a look at those files and fix a possible bug perhaps.
