Mosaic registration...

Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and it  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

I continue experimenting with a large mosaic (eventually 9 panes), and have had some success.

Using Bracken's Quick Start Guide (V1.1, 2020 p.15) I'm trying to composite just 6 previously integrated panels with light pollution removed and have been unsuccessful because the process seems to hang at about 80% during dynamic distortion correction.

The process ran all night and seemed only slightly closer to a solution. After a restart this morning the console shows the following:

...
06:59:02 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full , Not Same Camera: iteration 624 RMS 14.62872
06:59:03 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full, Not Same Camera: iteration 625 decreasing trust region size
06:59:03 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full, Not Same Camera: iteration 626 decreasing trust region size
06:59:04 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full , Not Same Camera: iteration 627 RMS 14.62855
06:59:04 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full , Not Same Camera: iteration 628 RMS 14.62834
06:59:05 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full, Not Same Camera: iteration 629 decreasing trust region size
06:59:05 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full , Not Same Camera: iteration 630 RMS 14.62817
06:59:06 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full , Not Same Camera: iteration 631 RMS 14.62799
06:59:06 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full , Not Same Camera: iteration 632 RMS 14.62760
06:59:07 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full , Not Same Camera: iteration 633 RMS 14.62730
06:59:07 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full, Not Same Camera: iteration 634 decreasing trust region size
06:59:08 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full , Not Same Camera: iteration 635 RMS 14.62721
06:59:09 - Multiple View Uncalibrated Complex DDC Full , Not Same Camera: iteration 636 RMS 14.62705
...

After thousands of iterations the RMS was slowly decreasing, but a rough estimate suggested it would take days to reach completion.

I tried 1500, 2500, and 4000 star targets, and have tried both pentagons and quadrilaterals as pattern recognition descriptors with scale start at 5 and scale stop at 10, 8, and 5 (pane overlaps is about 25%). Dynamic distortion correction is on, and I;ve tried both on and off for same camera and optics. Registration mode is mosaic usin g the projective model.

Can someone suggest a solution?

Well, this time the process did finish. With unexpected results! 🤣 .

I think I found a black hole at the center of the nebula

4000 stars target, mosaic mode reristration using pentagons, scale start 5, stop 10 with dynamic distortion correction using projective reg. model.

Oeh nice. 🙂 I think your data doesn't need distortion correction in this case. Unfortunately, in a case like this, the statistics go hay-wire if there is no distortion basically. I think you'll solve it by not doing distortion correction.

ps. does this also happen if you use the standard settings and not a projective reg. model?

Apparently Distrortion Correction is required ifr I use Mosaic registration mode.

You mean Normal registration mode instead of Mosaic, I assume. I'm going to try that today.

I literally spent all day yesterday trying to get this to work—I had good success with five panes. But I tried so many different combinations I've lost track of what I did.

Today I'll keep a log of what does and doesn't work.

Used Mosaic mode but with dynamic distortion off and it worked pretty well the first try. Just needed some cropping and tweaks afterward.

11 panes, 25 hours total integration. Roughly 3º x 2º

Excellent, I indeed meant mosaic mode without correction. Though normally that is advised, your data seems to not need it.
