Mar 28 2026 APP 2.0.0-beta40 will be released in 7 days.

It did take a long time to have the work finished on this and itĀ  will have a major performance boost of 30-50% over 2.0.0-beta39 from calibration to integration. We extensively optimized many critical parts of APP. All has been tested to guarantee correct optimizations. Drizzle and image resampling is much faster for instance, those modules have been completely rewritten. Much less memory usage. LNC 2.0 will be released which works much better and faster than LNC in it's current state. And more, all will be added to the release notes in the coming weeks...

Update on the 2.0.0 release & the full manual

We are getting close to the 2.0.0 stable release and the full manual. The manual will soon become available on the website and also in PDF format. Both versions will be identical and once released, will start to follow the APP release cycle and thus will stay up-to-date to the latest APP version.

Once 2.0.0 is released, the price for APP will increase. Owner's license holders will not need to pay an upgrade fee to use 2.0.0, neither do Renter's license holders.

Thanks Thomas, @gordoabc

Will test it and will let you know šŸ˜‰ I am quite sure the bug is already solved ! but we can never have enough test data so thanks a lot!

Hi Thomas @gordoabc,

Thanks a lot! It works now without problems šŸ˜‰ Your image has many !!! stars, APP finds 100.000 possible stars... so the reducer takes a bit of time, but it does work now without issues

cNorth American Nebula LHaRGB 1 crop lpc cbg original
cNorth American Nebula LHaRGB 1 crop lpc cbg reduced

Will try to release the 1.083 stable version with this fix as soon as possible šŸ˜‰

Hi Mabula, I get a white screen instead of an analytical graph which is quite annoying. I will have to go back to an older version until that is fixed.

Ā

Cheers and you and your team have nice festivity days,

Pete

Ā

Thanks Pete, we are fixing thisĀ  for sure ! We know that a white screen appears for the analytical graph and also viewing the Bad Pixel Map. It is a so-called regression bug and the fix will be easy šŸ˜‰

APP 1.083 stable will come soon with this fixed.

Thank you for the quick response, Mabula. And sorry for my short-tempered wording. It was late that night and I had waited long for the result instead of going to bed - just to see that white screen 😖 ...

I am glad to hear that it will be an easy fix. I went back to 1.082 for the meantime...

Hi @darshnaladva,

You mean when you load such a file into the tool? That is very odd. Can you upload such a file?

Can you upload one of those images so I can test it?

https://upload.astropixelprocessor.com/

username and password: upload

There is a folder: STAR-REDUCER-TESTING, please upload the file in that folder and let me know once uploaded. I will test as soon as possibleĀ  Thanks!

I have just added this.Ā  HH_Stack_031121-RGB-021121_031121_221021-mod-lpc-cbg-St

However it seems to be every file that i try.Ā

I have removed and reinstalled APP - same error - but also it crashed during Star Anaylsis this time too for me.

Ā

Thanks Darsh

He isn't. šŸ™‚ That's why it's a beta, we collect as much as we can and greatly appreciate anything people come up with. Some of these have been fixed already at least.

Hi Darsh @darshnaladva,

Thank you very much for your upload.

I have tested your image, but everything works normally here in the 1.083-beta3 release.

I suspect that you have a different problem: an Out Of Memory exception that crashes APP completely.

Have you adjusted the amount of RAM that APP can use with the CFG button on the top left? If not, please set it higher and restart APP and try again šŸ˜‰

An additional comment, the image that you uploaded is an already stretched 16bit TIFF file. The tool will work much better if you load unstretched 32bits float data šŸ˜‰ So please don't stretch your data before using this tool...

Here is what I get with the 1.083-beta3 version:

HH Stack 031121 RGB 021121 031121 221021 mod lpc cbg St original
HH Stack 031121 RGB 021121 031121 221021 mod lpc cbg St reduced

Many thanks for testing.Ā  Thats interesting feedback regarding my image.Ā  So straight after the stack and the file it autosaves - you suggest using that file to do the star reduction.Ā  I will try that.

Ā

I have done a hard reset after an update on the laptop.Ā  Ā Beta 3 is working for me tonight.Ā  So I have been playing with the raw sliders.Ā  Works like a treat.Ā  tried to do a star removal and for the halos it's doing something funny on Altinik cutting out the nebula surrounding.Ā  However I think i just need to learn the process.

I started using the B3 version for the first time today. Images have been previously stacked with B2. Few observations:

1- Attempted to use remove light pollution: after the image loads into the viewer, the rendered image looks very strange where on side looks more saturated than the other.

2- Calibrate Star Color in "Balance RGB mode": does not have any effect whatsoever on the image. I compared the same image with star color calibration "Balance RGB mode" and the resulting image out of B2 is differently different from out of B1. I compared the images to the image after color calibration in Pixinsight and I clearly see that the image our of B2 is pretty much consistent with the results from Pixinsight. There is very little or no change in the image when using B3.Ā

3- attached is a screen capture for: (a)image with star color calibration using B2 (b)image with star color calibration using B3 (c) image with LP removal and calibrated background using B3Ā Ā

CC BalanceRGB B2

Hi @ippiu,

The bugs for the Bad Pixel Map and the analytical graph are fixed šŸ˜‰

Your HSL issue is not a bug, the behaviour of the tool has changed quite a bit. The High Dynamic range bug fix and the more responsive sliders are both the reason why things have changed a bit. Simply use the show color selection button, to check which pixels will be adjusted with the range that you have set with LOW and HIGH sliders ;-). It works really easy now.Ā  :

  • IMPROVED, HSL Selective Color Tool, the tool has been improved greatly. Previously, the tool had issues with objects with a high dynamic range in the center of the field of view. This has been solved. Furthermore, the sliders work more directly. Previously, if you would set of the sliders to 0,5 you would hardly see a change in the result. Now you will see changes much more quickly making the tool easier to work with. We have removed the luminance slider because it had no use really and would only lead to odd results. Finally, the user interface has been improved with buttons to see the color selection: "show color selection" so you can see the pixels that will be affected clearly before you make changes. This means that you can actually see the color channel mask for the selective color to be applied. There is a button to see the original image and there is a button to see the actual image on which you are working on the tool at that moment. Finally, the tool now has a proper tooltip.

New UI HSL Selective Color
Adjust Red Cyan
HSL SELECTIVE COLOR image to adjust
HSL SELECTIVE COLOR image to adjust RED COLOR SELECTION
HSL SELECTIVE COLOR image to adjust CYAN COLOR SELECTION
HSL SELECTIVE COLOR Adjusted

I am implementing as we speak a couple of more presets like 0- background + 3*noise, that will help you see how much 3*noise means on the HIGH slider.

I will release a beta4 very soon now with these fixes...

Hi @darshnaladva,

Great to hear it is working now šŸ˜‰ The tool is not perfect yet and a Halo problem star like Altinik can be a problem in itself yes.. it can be very hard to discriminate between a bright nebula and the extended halo of a star.

I'm doing a 30-panel mosaic using a MacBook Pro M1 Max, 64GB and have some issues with beta3. I'd like to export the console output to show the team the problem, but can't find a way to do that.

Is the most recent entire console output saved anywhere? If not, please add that to your feature request for the next release. I know I can copy and paste the output, but on my machine at least, it truncates the first part of the console output.Ā

Thanks!Ā

@rixon Can you try to go to the console and type CTRL-a? APP is implemented in Java and doesn't support the CMD key. Otherwise you can scroll all the way up and then use the mouse to click and select all text in the console.

Yes, I can do that, but it's still truncated. Missing quite a log at the top of the run. Thanks.

Hello APP team (happy new year)

release 1.083 beta 4 is really nice !

I made lot of test (mainly beta 3) and it is really stable (I am on OSX).

Star reduction in beta 4.2 is now amazing. The best I have seen (I use several algorithms in different software) and it is simply the best in linear mode. Some small artefacts can appears on small stars but it is a great job.

One thing : on remove star option, when checked, the grey threshold option is not selectable but still active (0.001 remove stars, but left at 0.099 will not remove stars). Anyway remove stars option is not my favorite tool (some 2 others algorithm in the astrophoto world can do this better).

Ā

Need now a very nice noise reduction tool in linear mode 🤗Ā

Ā

Thanks

Philippe

Hi Philippe,

Best wishes for 2022!!!

Thank you very much for your feedback, that is really great ! I know about the artefacts on the small stars, and am still thinking about it on how to improve that.

I will check the threshold option, and fix it, thanks šŸ˜‰

Indeed, noise reduction tool needs to be there soon now!
