Hello,

i am currently using the trial of app to decide if i am going to purchase, but the integration is very slow and i

hear from others that this is not normal behaviour.

I have assigned 15gb of memory to it, but still an intergration with 250 light frames, and 50/50/50 calibration frames

takes 1,5-2 hours to stack.

Is there anything i can check?

Thank you,

Rick

After having started the integration over 3 hours ago, it is now at 28%. i feel like i must be missing something, because i cannot image it taking this long.

@rickvanbellen Integrating a lot of images can take a long time indeed. Are those 250 frames all of the same FOV or are you creating a mosaic? And are all of the same filter/OSC or are you integrating multiple filter images? Also can you tell us a bit about the rest of the specs of your computer? how many cores does it have and what CPU type and hard disk do you have? Only lots of memory unfortunately is not enough for APP.

Hello Wouter, thanks for getting back to me. To answer your questions:

1. Yes, all roughly the same FOV, minimal shift

2. All the same filter (L-Pro)/Standard DSLR attached to telescope

3. Intel Core i5-2500 @3.3 GHz 4 cores / HDD 1TB SATA-300 7200 RPM ( https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/255722/hgst-ultrastar-a7k2000-sata-3gb-s-1tb/specificaties/?fbclid=IwAR3zpKwhZZdWV6eX41vc4ZRB0rXqYFPXW4owb_pmFsVpQSndnkPPZ9GXsgQ) 16GB memory

The stack finished after roughly 4 hours.

Thanks!

@rickvanbellen Hi Rick, are we talking about a full frame sensor or APS-C? That also influences the integration time. Did you use all default settings so did you simply load all lights and calibration frames, went to tab 6 and clicked Integrate or did you modify some of the settings? If you did, what was the reason for that? And does the total time for an integration go down if you use the default settings?

Hi Wouter, is concerns a Canon 650D APS-C. For this test i used the default settings and went straight to tab 6. The previous attempt had adjusted settings and took just as long.

We probably need some sort of benchmark to really be able say what is normal for a setup. But your system specs aren't the best for bigger datasets in that sense, so that would not surprise me a lot. What you can try is to divide the data in a few parts, for 250 frames, go for 50 each and then when you have the integrations per 50, reload those in as lights and integrate them together. That may be faster all around.

Hi Rick @rickvanbellen,

Stacking 250 OSC (color) APS-c frames on a pc with the mentioned specs will take some time for sure, yes... When you would have more CPU threads and would use an SSD harddisk for instance, it would go much ! faster.

In your case, the i5-2500 @3.3 GHz 4 cores (2011-2013, so 10 years old)  and the SATA-300 7200 RPM are by far the limiting factors in processing speed. Have you checked with device manager that the harddisk is actually running at full specification, are the motherboard drivers up-to-date? The amount of RAM is not the problem, but the RAM speed is low for sure, because the CPU and thus motherboard are about 10 years old I would guess?

Kind regards,

Mabula

Hi Mabula,

Thanks for your reply.

I was afraid that the CPU would indeed be limiting the speed, along with the HDD. You are right that they are about 10 years old, but for the most

part the function just fine.

I will make sure to keep in mind that i either have to accept the slower times, or that i will need to upgrade at some point.

Thank you for confirming, at least i know that it is likely not a software issue 🙂

Kind regards,

Rick

@rickvanbellen And try to process in batches like I mentioned above, that might help you with this system as well.

@vincent-mod Hi Vincent, yes, i Will give that a try but i think i Will really prefer to do 1 integration. Hope i can upgrade my processor and ssd soon. Thanks for your help!
