I always find that with PI deconvolution is a total mystery and I've never managed to get it right... any ideas on a simpler deconvolution process?

Hi Sara,

Yes, deconvolution will be implemented in APP.

I have already done research on it and I will try to demystify the process for you, possibly by keeping the amount parameters that you can tweak to a minimum.

Future plans on deconvolution will be to integrate it even into the stacking engine, just like LNC, the individual subs will then be optimized (basically the sharpest image of the stack will be used for sharpening the other images, giving much better sharpness in the stack probably, this idea is similar to the CLEAN algorithm used in professional astronomy.)

Kind regards,

Mabula

Hi Mabula, I would be very interested in this feature too. Is there any progress / timeline on this front? Best Frank

Hi Frank @foschmitz,

This one will probably take a bit more time still.. but work is progressing fast. APP 1.060 will be released probably within 1 week, with very big upgrade of the complete calibration engine including dark scaling 😉 and several other fixes/adjustments.

Grat thanks for the update Mabula! I can imagine that deconvolution and the whole psf modeling around it will be quite tricky. Thanks for your great work!!

I would just mention the blind deconvolver in StarTools is particularly effective and doesn't have anything like the fussiness of PI's requirement to manually build point-spread functions as you do in PI.  Unfortunately, everything else in StarTools is strikingly difficult to use, so I only ever dip into it for deconvolution.

I am also new to APP and finding its integrated preprocessing a joy to work with, so really hoping other processing tools like denoising, multiscale processing, deconvolution & star reduction will come along eventually with the same elegance and ease of use.

Keep up the great work, Mabula.

John.

Hi John @johnw3d,

Please accept my apologies for the late approval of your post ;-(

(in august there was a malfunction in the forum software which caused me to miss a couple of post unfortunately... it's solved now luckily)

Thank you for your feedback and your nice compliment.

Indeed, alls the mentioned tools will be coming to APP. Calibration to Integration in APP is now very mature and development will be focused more and more on post-processing tools like you indicated 😉

Thanks,

Mabula
