Hi,

Am having intermittent problems with the interface going haywire. The screen overlays itself multiple times at random and makes it impossible to use the buttons. Closing the program and starting again sometimes helps but if you are adding a large file list each time it is a real pain as you can imagine.

No issues with any other software.

Please see screenshot attached.

Screengrab

PC is 1 month old, Win 10, RTX2060, AMD 3700x. Windows and graphics drivers are up to date.

Has anyone else experienced this? Amy help appreciated.

Thank you,

Stephen

Dear Stephen @stephent,

That is very odd to say the least... thank you for sharing this. I have not heard of this before.

I know that APP works properly on Win10, also with the RTX chips (i have a 2080), and I have been running APP on the AMD cpus as well without issues. So my first guess would be that something specific to your operating system or computer+monitor setup is causing this. Do you have multiple monitors attached, if so, how?

Hi,

Yes, exactly same problem, RTX 2080. Not sure if display zoom level has something to do with it, with 125% issue seemed to be almst constant, with 150% it seems to happen more rarely - haven't tried 100%.

Thank you for your reply. Just a single Dell monitor attached.

I uninstalled re-downloaded and re-installed 1.075 after posting this and the software behaved itself ok. Am away from my computer for a few days but will update this post later in the week if the problem stays away... or comes back 🙂

Mabula has a 2080 in his laptop, so he's going to investigate if something is up with this GPU somehow. Thanks for reporting!

Hi Timo @tiku & Stephen @stephent,

Thank you both for sharing this issue. I will test later today on my laptop which has a RTX2080 to check if that chip is causing this behaviour and then hopefully fix it.

Hi Timo @tiku & Stephen @stephent,

I have run APP 1.076 beta 3 on an Alienware Area-51m laptop which has a desktop Nvidia RTX2080 graphical chip and Windows 10 professional. Everything works fine. I have adjusted desktop scaling while working in APP 100%, 125%, 150% back and forth and APP kept behaving itself normally.

So from this test, I think it will be safe to conclude that your issue is not caused by this new family of Nvidia graphical chips, RTX 2060,2070,2080, so we probably need to look elsewhere.

Can you both share your hardware details? like motherboard, cpu, ram, if the motherboard has a GPU as well besides your RTX chip (my alienware has this as well)? Perhaps you are both using new Ryzen Cpus?

Kind regards,

Mabula

Hi,

Yes, Ryzen 7 3800x, and RTX 2080 is the only GPU in system. After a reboot I tried switching scalings and there were no issues this time, so whatever it causing it is unknown.

I do have a feeling that I've experienced similiar issue with JavaFX few years ago when trying something else. Can't right now remember what it actually was.

Hi Timo @tiku & Stephen @stephent,

So you are both using a Ryzen cpu 3700x and 3800x, maybe that is causing the screen corruption in this case. The RTX2060/2070/2080 is not responsible as I could test that myself yesterday.

Can you tell me which motherboard you have in the computer?

Is the motherboard bios up-to-date?

Please tell me exactly which nvida drivers you are using?

And is it game ready drivers or studio drivers?

Do you have both installed the Nvidia Geforce Experience and Nvidia Control Panel ?

Which Windows 10 version? Home or Professional?

Who manufactured your computer?

Is directx properly installed? Run dxdiag.exe from the start button

I will investigate in the mean time if a problem is known like this related to Java (APP runs on Java 8, java 8 is in the installer and APP used that automatically) and these CPUs 😉

Kind regards,

Mabula

Asus ROG Strix X570-F, bios up to date. nvidia DCH driver 441.87, game ready. NVCP & Geforce experience is installed (although Geforce experience is not activated, haven't logged in).

Also there was no difference between 441.87 drivers and the previous version I had.

OS: Windows 10 pro build 1909, and directx is working normally.

Display: 3840 x 2160, either 125% or 150% scaling.

I haven't been able to break it again after yesterday's reboot.

Hi, apologies for the delay, I have been away from my computer....

Windows 10 Home, Version 10.0.18363 Build 18363
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 1005, 01/08/2019
BaseBoard Product ROG STRIX X570-F GAMING
RTX 2060 Super, NVIDIA game ready drivers 441.87 installed and Geforce experience installed but not running.

DXDIAG run, no errors

I have run APP tonight after the re-install and so far the behaviour is OK. Will post back in this thread if anything changes!

Best regards,

Stephen.

Interesting, yes please keep us updated if it happens again. It is a weird mishap with the display driver it seems.

Unfortunately this has happened again today in 1.075 after a successful session yesterday without any problems (other than the poor quality of my subs!!!!!)

Today it started when the load frame dialogue box was opened. I was looking to load bias frames. The screen overwrites itself multiple times as you move the mouse around the screen, covering the buttons. There is less overwriting when the mouse is not moving.

End task from Task Manager and start again is the only option.

I'm going to download the beta now & install that. I guess being so intermittent this is going to be hard to pin down 🙁

Update 5:50pm GMT: One quick session with Beta, working OK so far. Will post back if any issues.

Hi @stephent,

Thank you for mentioning this. I think I now know a way to fix this behaviour and I will try to include a fix in the next beta release: 1.076 beta 4.

I have actually seen the problem myself a couple of days ago when I moved APP from 1 monitor to another monitor. But I could easily fix it, by minizing APP and then maximizing it again, that forces the application to redraw it's windows. Have you tried that?

Hi Mabula, that's great that you have a fix for the problem 🙂

Yes I have done the minimise and maximise which as you say redraws the screen, but (for me) the problem just starts up again. Only a restart seems to make it go away.

Thank you for looking at this for me 👍

Hi @stephent & @tiku,

Can you both try the APP 1.076 beta 4 release ?

I have added some extra code to prevent screen corruption like you are experiencing. You can find the download links here:

https://www.astropixelprocessor.com/community/appreleases/downloads/

Please let me know if all is okay now 😉

I'll test. Might take a bit to get reliable test results since it took 1.5 weeks before issue resurfaced with beta3.

Well it didn't take as long as I expected. Issue is still present in beta4, although it happened only once.

It seemed a bit different, looks like screen was refreshed or something like that, but unfortunately issue persist after refresh.

I think this issue is slightly different than the one you got. Here the window content get scrambled, because whenever you move mouse, the window contents are drawn to the mouse location. So it is all over the place very quickly, and it applies to whole screen content including all dialog boxes, modal or not. So I'm guessing that it cannot be coming from the application layer, something is messed up in the underlying UI layer that starts using mouse location as origin for the screen content.

@tiku & @stephent,

Thank you for your feedback, okay, then I think it comes down to the actual Java platform (APP is shipped with Oracle JDK 8) and compatibility with your motherboard/chipset/gpu and use of either directx or opengl as a choice by JDK 8 to draw the interface...

I will need to create a separate installer with some test functionality to prevent the issue in further versions. Maybe disabling either opengl or directx for the interface will solve it.

It will take me a couple of days but I will prepare special windows installers for you which you can then test, okay?

Hi Mabula, will test as & when available, thanks.

One thing I noticed (and it may be nothing), when you open a load frame dialogue box, the buttons on the left of the screen turn from grey to white. When you close the dialogue box, the buttons are redrawn grey from white, but this takes some time (maybe a whole second for all of the buttons). This struck me as odd on a new and fairly powerful computer, as if something resource-heavy is happening.

As I say, it might be nothing, but it might provide an additional clue for you.

Best,

Stephen.

Hi @stephent & @tiku,

Thank you, yes, that is quite indicative of a problem with the graphical system ... I suspect that somehow there is a problem with either directx or OpenGL on your machines for some reason.

One thing that you could check, when APP starts, disable OpenGL for the image viewer with the top left GL2,GL3,GL4 button by clicking once, it will turn oragne and say OpenGL. Then OpenGL is disabled for the image viewer. Then process as normal and let me know if the screen corruption still will happen at some point, thanks 😉

Hi,

I think I found the workaround.. putting machine to sleep and waking it up fixed the issue.

I downloaded 1.077 on a 30 day trial and I am intermittently seeing this exact behavior as well.   It's like the user interface isn't redrawing properly.  The widgets are in the right locations because you can mouse where a button should be and click it.  If it's going to happen it's usually while I'm loading various frames in step 1 (no rhyme or reason).  My system is a bit dated:

Windows 10 (1903)

CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570 CPU - @ 3.40GHz 4 Cores
RAM - 8 GB  (APP is configured to use 4 GB)

Graphics Chipset - AMD Radeon R7 200 Series

Radeon Software Version 20.1.4 (released 1/24/2020)

I'm using a "Standard" profile - no gaming or eSports.

Hello Mabula,

I'm a first time user, having just downloaded the trial last night.  I'm seeing what I believe is the same problem (continuous redraw events making the application impossible to use).  I have a Windows 10 workstation with two 4K monitors (extended), and at first the problem seemed to subside when I moved the application to the secondary monitor, but now it happens regardless of monitor I move the application to.

I have not seen very recent updates to this post, so I thought I would ask what you would need to troubleshoot this issue.  I'm certainly willing to help.

My system's specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-8650K

RAM: 32 GB

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (8GB)

OS: Windows 10 Pro

Sorry for the delay (busy days). Are you still having these issues? Could you try to see if this also happens when using 1 monitor?

Yes, I'm still experiencing this issue, and it still happened after I booted with just 1 monitor.  Anything else I could try, or any logs I could obtain for you?

Hey, sorry to bump into the thread but I wanted to chime in and note that I have also frequently experienced this bug. I've just been able to reproduce it rather quickly after upgrading to 1.082 (see screenshot). I've noticed this problem since (I believe) the beginning of the year so one of the pre-1.076 betas.

What seems to be a quick way to trigger it is to have a JFileChooser (like the open file dialog for selecting the work dir) and hovering over either the details button top right or the cancel button bottom right until a tooltip appears that overlaps with both the main application frame and the modal dialog. Often it triggers on the first try, sometimes switching between those 2 buttons's tooltips triggers it sooner or later.

I strongly suspect this is a Java2D Direct3D or OpenGL acceleration issue. Note that APP's use of OpenGL for the image renderer does not seem to make an impact whether I toggle that on or off before triggering the glitch (not that I would expect it to if this is a problem at the platform level). What does strike me as weird is that I use other Java/Swing based applications like IntelliJ IDEA on a daily basis and they do not exhibit this behaviour.

If there's anything I can do to help feel free to ping me at my email too.

Some system details:
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 18363) (18362.19h1_release.190318-1202)
Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X
Memory: 65536MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Display Memory: 40813 MB
Nvidia Driver version: 451.67 (latest)
Dual monitors 3440x1440 + 1920x1080, problem also occurs over RDP single screen at 1920x1080

Sorry to poke my nose where it does not belong perhaps, but on a hunch after typing my previous post I had a peek around and adding:

-Dsun.java2d.d3d=false

to [JVMOptions] in AstroPixelProcessor.cfg

to disable Direct3D drawing acceleration seems to completely stop the glitching for me. UI performance is acceptable (unaltered, as far as I can tell) so for me this is an OK workaround for now.

@vincent-mod glad to be of help then. Desktop Java is a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away) for me (Swing and SWT, JavaFX didn't exist yet), but the server side is still my day job so I have a complete environment here (Win64+Linux). If there's anything I can do to help (logs, running test suites or debug builds) I'll be happy to help.
