Hello,

I am a new user of APP, and just starting to learn about calibration in preparation for my first image stack. In fact, I created my first MasterBias and MasterFlat files this evening. I have three cameras that I am using for Astrophotography at present; a stock 7D MkII, an Ha-modded 5D MkII, and a 5D MkIV. I have no problems creating the MasterFlat frames for the 7DII and the 5DII, and can see them in the image viewer. When I create the ones for the 5DIV, everything seems to work the same, but when I double-click on the files to load them into the image viewer to check them, both the individual Flat frames and the MasterFlat frames come up black even though the histogram display looks similar to the other two cameras. I ran the 5DII MasterFlat first, then ran the MasterFlat for the 5DIV (each with appropriate Bias frames) without changing anything. When the MasterFlat (and individual Flats) for the 5DIV came up black, I ran the 5DII files again and could see the files just fine. I then ran the 7DII MasterFlat file, and could see that as well. It seems to be creating the file properly; could it just be a display problem with those files? Or am I missing something?

Thank you,

Paul

I realized this morning that it might be helpful if I added a little more information. I am using APP Version 1.074.1. I also tried opening one of the Flat frames from my 5DIV in Photoshop CC and it opened normally and looked like the images that APP displayed from the other cameras. The Flat frames were made using an LED light panel and were captured the same evening and in the same manner for all three cameras, with similar histograms.

That seems weird indeed, would you mind installing the beta 6 of APP 1.075 to see if that remains the case?

Thank you for your response. I would be willing to do that. I have several targets that I have captured with all three cameras and I want to process the combined images, but am leery of going through all the work to set them up if I can't see the resulting image. To make things even stranger, I just loaded the MasterFlat file that I created previously back into APP, and it now comes up properly and I can see it. There are two things that I have done in the interim that may have resulted in the image becoming visible; I bumped the RAM allotment APP is allowed to use from 2 GB to 8GB, and I restarted APP to make the change effective. The 5DIV is a 30MP camera, whereas the other two are only about 20MP; perhaps 2GB of RAM is not sufficient to display an image from a 30MP camera. If that is the case, it would explain the problem, and confirm my hunch that it was indeed a display problem. I think I will try to work with it the way it is, and if I have any more problems will try installing the beta 6 of APP 1.075.

Thank you again,

Paul

I had to re-run the MasterFlats for the 5DIV because I forgot to calibrate them with the BPM, and had the same problem showed up when they were done; the histogram showed information but the image viewer was black. I decided to run through an integration in case it was just a display problem, and got a warning that the MasterFlat was not calibrated correctly, and needed either a MasterBias or MasterDarkFlat. I am confident that I had loaded a MasterBias to match the flats along with the BPM, so apparently the MasterFlat was not created properly. The integration that I started last night is still running about 12 hours later (I am running a Multi-session integration with LNC and MBB) so I am not able to install the beta 6 of APP 1.075 at this time. I am probably going to re-run this integration once it finishes to change some parameters while I have everything loaded, so I may not be able to try the new version before tomorrow. For the next integration I will probably try the original MasterFlat without the BPM, since that would at least show up. I don't understand why this problem hasn't shown up with other users with a 5DIV.

Thank you again for your assistance,

Paul

Yes, that is strange so it's likely some issue with either data or your system. If it keeps being an issue then I or Mabula will have to have a look at the data itself.

I have downloaded beta 6 of APP 1.075, but haven't run the files through yet. To better understand what was going on, I shut down and restarted APP 1.074.1, as I did before, and the two MasterFlat files that I created yesterday for my 5DIV that would not display, now will display, as was the case previously. I then re-created them once again, making sure to include the BPM for the camera and the MasterBias I created to match the flats. When both of them were finished, this time both of them would display properly, so I have no idea why I had problems before. I plan to run another integration tonight, and will use the MasterFlat files I created today, and see if I have more problems. I will let you know the results either way.

So the full 1.075 just came out, so another download would be advised (sorry). 😉

Thank you for the heads-up, and no need to apologize. I downloaded and installed it prior to running a Multi-session integration tonight using subs from 3 cameras; an Ha modded 5DII, a 7DII, and my 5DIV. The Flats and matching Bias frames for all three cameras were captured at the same time and in the same manner, and the MasterBias were all created in the same way. In the integration, the MasterFlats created previously were accepted and used for the 5DII and the 7DII, but once again I got the same error that the MasterFlat for the 5DIV were not created properly and needed to have the Bias removed through calibration with either a MasterBias or a MasterDarkFlat, even though I had a matching MasterBias loaded. I have shot new Bias frames, and tomorrow, after this integration finishes, I hope to generate new MasterBias frames and new MasterFlat frames, and then run a short integration using only subs from the 5DIV and see if it works properly. If I am doing something incorrectly, I would sure like to know what it is. I will let you know what I find out. Thank you again for your assistance.

Very interesting indeed. Probably the quickest hint would be to upload your calibration masters of the 5DIV and a few lights to see if we can reproduce the issue.

I could do that, but I would need some assistance in how to go about it.

I am currently uploading 5 Bias Frames, 5 Flat Frames, 5 Lights, and a MasterBias and MasterFlat I just created using those files (and some additional ones). I captured all new Bias Frames, and used those. I get the error right after the MasterBias is created and as the Flats are being loaded. I have also included some screenshots of the text on the screen. My Internet connection is really slow right now, so it may take an hour or more to upload. I used APP 1.075 to try to create the MasterBias and MasterFlat. It almost seems like it doesn't like that I used ISO 100.

Thank you Paul! I notified Mabula, he's abroad at the moment but should have access soon, might take a bit of time.

Thank you. Vignetting with my 500mm f/4 lens is minimal, so it isn't a real hardship if I can't use MasterFlats for that camera for a little while. I was delayed in getting them uploaded as I wanted to try creating the MasterBias and MasterFlat with the latest version of APP. It would be nice to be able to use flats, though.
