Hi all,

I have just checked the new feature of comet stacking with APP and it seems to work very well even with the poor dataset (faint comet over the buildings/trees).

Do you have any workflow how to acquire the image with the sharp comet and sharp stars? With the default options, comet is sharp and clear in the output image, however the stars are trailing over the picture due to the comet movement over the period of time.

Will there be any stars rejection feature to get only the comet and/or the sharp stars output to combine each other later?

Great work though, thank you!

OK, I have watched the newest video tutorial and the answer is there - that is feature for next beta versions 😉

Indeed @sidiouss,

This 1ste beta is simply only comet registration. Depending on the feedback now on this beta, the comet detection algorithm might be tweaked and we will start work now on special comet integration options to get you a result with a sharp comet and sharp stars 🙂

Thanks for your feedback !

Would there possibly be a work flow right now where you could reduce the star count to nothing and just have the comet in the frame?

I have tried to reduce the star count from the default with no luck.

Not in this beta, this is just to test it works for everyone’s data. That feature will get here in either the full release or the one after that (it’s the most tricky one of what we need to implement).

@mabula-admin

which version will have these features? Then I will wait with my Comet processing. Got great material.

How it will behave if some foreground in the image (Mountain, Trees etc.)?

Hello,

I had thought that the latest beta would include integration options for sharp comet & sharp stars. It is something I waited for since capturing Neowise last summer. Is anyone else hopeful for this integration option?

Regards,

Randy

Dear Randy @randyh,

Sharp comet and sharp stars fully automated as an integration option is still being worked on 😉 So we definitely want to make this possible soon, since it will be a unique feature for sure !

Yes Mabula, this would be really a unique feature. I took a lot of extreme beautiful images of Neowise last year, still waiting for this feature;-)

@possipossi-de Yes that would be nice, the star reducing option that is now being improved will help with that as well so that's why Mabula is focusing on that first.

Is this now in Beta2 already implemented? Which settings i need, to get sharp stars withoud trails and the comet?

Thanks!

Not yet no, not sure it'll be in 1.083 to immediately combine it like that.

Any update on sharp stars without trails and the comet?

No clear one at the moment. 1.083 will have an improved comet integration module, but not this possibility (yet).

Any update on this feature? I worked a comet and what I get is not really usable at all.

@vincent-mod Thank you for all of your help!  I just downloaded the newest 2.0 beta and, like everyone else, am hoping to achieve a sharp comet with round stars 🙂  I know this was a feature that was being worked on for future beta versions.

Any news on if this is possible with this version?  Thanks!!

@luckybudd.  Don't hold your breath ,  it has been promised a year and a half ago...   Your technique is the best I have found.  I was close to a decent result but was struggling with getting rid of the stars without affecting the comet. You technique got me the boost I needed.  Good job!

I am so thankful I could help!  I love this software!  Everyone here has been so helpful, glad I could figure out a simple process that works 🙂

@luckybudd Mabula has moved this higher on his priority list to implement. Of course it's something people want when it's comet season, but we had other work as well. 🙂 It will be worked on.

Oh for sure!  No rush from my end!  I love this software and am so appreciative of all of his and everyone else's hard work!  I am very much a newbie to this hobby and this software has been so amazing!  I don't know if you saw it, but I made a little tutorial as to how to process a comet and get round stars - I hope it is easy enough for everyone that it takes some of the pressure of him 🙂  Here it is:

Thanks for all the advice and quick responses as always!

@vincent-mod cheers!  APP makes it pretty easy! If you guys have any advice on the MAD settings to bring out the comet yet hide the stars I would appreciate it.  I just trialed and errored to go with Kappa low at 8 and high at 1.5 - but I don't really know what I am doing 🙂  I suppose it is likely dependant on the quality, brightness of the data for each individual session.

It's not going to be a lot better than what you already showed at the moment, this will be worked on.

@luckybudd

Thanks for the very helpful video!  I also have a Mac, but no PC or Starnet, but I discovered that I could do the same thing from APP by using the Remove Stars feature of Star Reduction under Tools.

I'm struggling with comet vs stars in registration, and like everyone, I can get a nice comet with the typical trailing of stars. I got really inspired and took every sub-frame, used the remove-stars at 1.3 to leave only the comet and saved each frame, thinking that I could then easily register on the comet, and add in one frame with stars and be done!

It did not work.

The program did not like this at all, perhaps because there were NO stars in the frame? Why couldn't it just register on the comet nucleus and be done?

Thank you Lucky Budd. I had watched your video and watched it again, and while your method works, it is not of the level of quality in the final image I hope to achieve. I'll continue looking around. I strongly feel that eliminating all stars from the sub frames and then processing those should yield a fine comet, and it would then be very easy to add back a star field. I'm still working through that as a possibility.
